E-Learning Courses off the Shelf or Custom

When it comes to creating e-Learning courses, you have two options: off the shelf, or custom.

Off the shelf courses are ready to use, often including built-in content and activities.

They can be a great option if you're looking to save time and money.

However, they may not always fit your brand or be tailored to your organization's needs.

Custom courses, on the other hand, offer more flexibility. You can work with experts to create a course that is adapted to your brand, objectives, and requirements.

  • You'll also have access to premium content and activities that are tailored to your exact specifications.

  • You can also be sure that the course is up-to-date, as you'll be able to make changes and updates whenever you need to. If you're looking for a course that is tailored to your organization's needs, custom e-Learning courses are the way to go.

Branding and eLearning

Off the shelf content is consumable directly on the selling agency's platform and therefore cannot be changed.

This option is a direct consumable and normaly more affordable, as you don't need to pay for the services of a designer, expert and platform.

However, you might end up with a design that doesn't reflect your business's values or image.

With custom branding, you can create a project logo, tagline, and other elements that are tailored to fit your company.

This option takes more time and may be a bit more expensive, but it ensures that your branding is unique and reflects your business in the best possible way.

Ultimately, the decision lies with you. But if you want your brand to make a lasting impression, custom branding is the way to go.

Generalist or expert

The question of whether to opt for an off the shelf or tailor made solution for employees' challenges and expectations is one that many organizations face.

Off the shelf solutions offer a quick and easy way to provide courses for standard knowledge like learning photoshop or to learn a language.

While tailor made solutions can be customized to fit the individual needs of each employee and to design custom job aids to answer and resolve a specific challenge.

Off the shelf solutions are often less expensive for a short project on a small community than custom solutions, and they can provide a comprehensive set of resources to employees in a short amount of time.

However, they are not as tailored to the individual needs of employee as a custom solution would be.

Also for a long project with a large audience custom eLearning courses can be much cheaper.

They allow for greater flexibility and customization to fit the unique needs of each employee.

No matter which option you decide to go with, it's important to keep in mind the individual needs of your employees when it comes to providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Off the shelf or custom, both solutions can be beneficial if the right approach is taken.

Know your audience

A cold and global knowledge like learning about Microsoft products is perfectly suitable for off the shelf.

But when it comes to your company and its unique mechanisms or product presentation, custom is a must.

Knowing your audience, discovering their

  • expectations,

  • understanding the needs,

  • identifying the challenges...

so many questions that only tailor made can answer within its complex and rare parameters.

Learning Management System

When you buy a course off the shelf you will be directing your community to a platform that is not your own.

So you will not benefit from all the satellite actions of the course, such as

  • webinars,

  • workshops,

  • exchanges and

  • above all the feedback that gives you the possibility of improving and adapting the lessons to your learners.

An e-learning platform is much more than a tool for publishing content.

An LMS is above all a collaborative space where exchanges are an integral part of learning.

An off the shelf course is like a closed shell created by an unknown cell

A tailor-made course is like an open and humble dialogue with your community.

Listen to the expectations, understand the mission. An eLearning course is above all a solution.

It is therefore essential to put the learner at the centre of the project.

This is of course impossible with off the shelf content.

Custom eLearning courses: When Your Training Needs Are Unique

If your training needs are unique, custom eLearning courses are a great way to go! Instead of using off-the-shelf courses, you can create content that is tailored to your audience's needs and goals.

Custom eLearning courses allow you to tailor the content to the specific needs of your learners and the goals of your organization.

You can create unique, engaging lessons that are tailored to the specific needs of your audience.

You can also use custom eLearning courses to create visuals that appeal to your target audience.

This helps to keep your learners engaged and ensure they get the most out of the elearning course.

You can also track the progress of your learners and identify areas they need extra help in.

With custom eLearning, you can ensure your learners get the best learning experience possible.

So if you want your training to be unique and tailored to your audience's needs, custom elearning is the way to go.

Off the Shelf or Custom eLearning courses

As you can see, I'm not really attracted by the off the shelf solution.

I consider an eLearning course to be a complex entity made up of an infinite number of parameters:

  • The strategy,

  • the survey,

  • the storyboarding,

  • the dialogue,

  • the exchanges

  • and above all an eLearning course is an organic being in constant evolution.

Your community of learners is an intelligent and mature audience that must take part in the construction of knowledge.

In this way, you build a real corporate culture that involves your learners in a continual learning process!
